Bad fashion #1

The worst fashion crime of them all. Jeans with runners/trainers/joggers (whatever you call them).

Explorer socks with runners a really bad look. Especially the clash in colour

Even worse with long trousers

So very bad...

...and yet so very common.

Please refrain from now on.

Here are links to the rest of the top 5

Number #5 White Socks with Black Shoes
Number #4 The Mobile Phone on Belt
Number #3 The Tucked in Shirt

Explorer socks with runners in church...

I know bad isn't it. I should have mentioned that nearly all the pictures are from blokes attending church or church related events.

Bad fashion at a church?! RARE INDEED

I don't completely agree with you though Mike. In a casual scenario, if they aren't bright white, and the jeans are cut so the bell out over the sneakers a bit, it's fine. Hell, jeans & sneakers are like butter & bread.

Just don't wear them out on a Friday night.

You wouldn't be an offender would you?

mike said... 7/11/2008 2:06 pm

Oh by the way I agree the slightly baggier cut is preferable. But oh my gosh if the jeans/pants are too short... and show sock.

It hurts just to write it.

I believe it's the sock/upper part of sneaker showing that is the sin itself.

Yep. I wear sneakers with jeans. My sneakers don't have much white on them and the baggy ends of the jeans stop that horrible looking "pinch" effect that skinny/short jeans & sneakers will give you.

Shaun, don't try to justify your bad jean-sneaker wearing habits! They are not butter and bread!

Don't do it people!

i never used to like sneakers with jeans, but it's so common here in america that i'm kinda used to it. In fact, i've even done it myself :P

I was discussing the jeans/sneakers issue with someone this very night. We concluded that sneakers, as in the plain white kind or the Converse kind, are ok with jeans. In fact, straight-leg or even skinny-leg jeans with this kind of sneaker look good. But trainers are another thing altogether. These are not ok with jeans.

I think the general consensus is that the WHITE shoes are the killers here. Otherwise, with a decent style of brown or darker, it *could* be a +1 acceptable. But overall, there is just NO HOPE for such shoes with khakis. Ever. Especially among single, young, male IT workers.

I have worn sneakers and jeans almost every day of my life. Come and fight me.

Except when I was at school and made to wear stiff leather shoes, or when I have been socialy pressured into wearing such shoes at a wedding or something.

I am going shopping today to find some new sneakers to wear with my jeans.

But I agree, the shoes you have pictured are running shoes, which were fashionable on their own in the 80's. Now they are only good for running. And big blue jeans are not good for running in.

What about people that were those "outdoor activitiy" shoes or whatever they are, like rock climbing shoes, to church. People are forced to start the conversation, "OK, what hardcore rock climbing type activity did you do today and why do you continue to wear your equipment in church?"

MAD PROPS JONNY

Borg, 'justify' is not a sensible word here. That's like saying I need to 'justify' tying my shoelaces.

The Borg said... 7/12/2008 1:32 pm

Ha ha!

A bit of semantics - the shoes pictured here are sneakers, the shoes Shaun is probably wearing are street shoes. And that's ok. (and a lot of people refer to "street shoes" as sneakers, hence the confusion)

I reckon the worst combo is shiny white track and field runners (pictured) that are designed purely for function (running) with the only regard to style being: thinking that shiny swoosh patterns on the side make it look cool
WITH
Acidwash/stonewash light denim jeans that taper at the ankle, displaying the above sneaker.

By the way, Mike, it looks like your models were all too keen to show off their fashion faux pas.

I did sneak most of the pictures to tell the truth.

I think that sneaker jeans wearers exude confidence because they have a high degree of shamelessness.

The Borg said... 7/12/2008 4:47 pm

So true. Speaking of shamelessness, can we 'name and shame'?

I'm guessing picture no.5 is Nick M. Not sure about the others, though (except of course no.1 which is you, Mike).

Bron said... 7/12/2008 7:48 pm

I ain't ashamed. I'm a sneakers and jeans kinda gal.

I would never wear heels with jeans. Mine simply aren't that kind of jeans. And frankly, I wouldn't want them to be.

If I'm trying to look trendy I'll go with cons style... but most of the time it's those 90s sneakers which are halfway between skate shoes and trainers. And they're WHITE.

:)

Jeans and heals are BAD too. Don't do it ladies.

Picture # 2 is Joel K.

I think the Jolly household obviously has too much time on their hands to claim that this a fashion crime... hopefully those who live in third world or improvished countries that commit this crime are not reading your blog... obviously middle-class christians exist in Tasmania.

Ow! The self-righteous indignation - it smarts!

Anthony Rochester said... 7/24/2008 9:26 pm

So, sneakers with jeans is bad, sneakers with explorer socks is bad, sneakers with long trousers is even worse, sneakers with tracksuit pants is even bad. What can you wear sneakers with? Is anyone allowed to wear sneakers?

Do you have any good fashion tips for things that people should wear? Maybe a Jane Franklin polo top with the collar up? Mirror sunglasses with fluro plastic frames sitting on your head?
Is there any public figure who exemplifies everything good about fashion and nothing bad? How about Mark Waugh?
